U.S. women’s national team coach Tom Sermanni has called in 24 players for upcoming friendlies against Canada and Russia, and four them play for Reign FC: goalkeeper Hope Solo, forward Sydney Leroux, midfielder Megan Rapinoe and defender Stephanie Cox.
The U.S. will play Canada on Jan. 31 (Frisco, Tex.) and then Russia on Feb. 8 (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Feb. 12 (Atlanta) to kick off the 2014 schedule.
“The players and staff are looking forward to playing matches,” Sermanni said in a news release. “We had productive training camps in December and January, but having three games in less than two weeks is a great opportunity for these players to continue to show their growth as individuals and as a team. This is the start of a year in which competition for places becomes much more critical, as does team performance and results.”
A couple players missing, forward Alex Morgan (ankle) and midfielder Tobin Heath (foot), are recovering from injury. The roster does include a couple top picks in the recent NWSL college draft (No. 1 pick Crystal Dunn of Washington and No. 3 Julie Johnston of Chicago).
Note: Rachel Buehler will now go by her married name Rachel Van Hollebeke.
