Saturday notes: Shalrie Joseph not in team’s plans for 2014, Leo Gonzalez had surgery

We just got done with our interviews on this busy first day of Sounders FC training camp. Here are a few notes before I get to posting interview transcripts later in the day:

*     *     *

Shalrie Joseph is not with the team. Coach Sigi Schmid said the veteran midfielder is still on the roster but not a part of the team’s plans going forward. Expect some resolution before the start of the season (perhaps a buyout).

Leo Gonzalez was the only Sounder to undergo offseason surgery. He was playing through a groin injury late last season and had that addressed. He is expected to be back for the Charleston portion of training camp.

— Schmid didn’t deny the team’s interest in acquiring Marco Pappa through the allocation order, but he also didn’t provide much of an update. It looks to be an ongoing situation since Chicago is on the record as saying they’re interested in bringing him back.

— There is no established starting goalkeeper as we start camp, so expect the battle between Marcus Hahnemann and Stefan Frei to be an intriguing one.

— Pretty much everyone expected to be here was here: Obafemi Martins and a lot of new guys like Kenny Cooper, Chad Marshall, Jalil Anibaba, Tristan Bowen, Chad Barrett and the draft picks.

— When it came to Martins, I asked him if he pursued any offseason loans or how he felt about last season, but he didn’t want to talk about either. He said having an offseason and preseason will be nice, though, especially compared to his hectic 2013.

— Unsigned trialists were listed in the previous post.
