Sounders up to No. 1 in allocation order, reportedly offer deal to Erik Friberg

Apologies for being late to this news, but in case you missed it, I’m in New York to help our paper cover the Super Bowl.

Here is a quick rundown.

The Sounders acquired the No. 2 spot in the allocation order through an offseason trade with Chivas USA. Philadelphia had been No. 1 recently, but used that spot Monday to acquire U.S. international Maurice Edu on loan from Stoke City.

So who might Seattle target at No. 1?

Well, reports have been out for two weeks that the Sounders were lining up a move for former MLS midfielder Marco Pappa, something coach Sigi Schmid at least acknowledged Saturday.

Sounder at Heart notes, however, that there are reports from Sweden that claim Seattle has made an offer to ex-Sounder Erik Friberg, who would also be subject to the allocation order since his departure involved a transfer fee.

Either way, you can expect some value to come from that top spot in the allocation order.
