Sounders win first preseason game, 2-1, against San Jose Earthquakes

Obafemi Martins said he thought a full preseason with the Sounders would help him.

That looked to be the case Wednesday, at least, as the designated player scored both goals in Seattle’s first preseason game, a 2-1 win against the San Jose Earthquakes at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.

Martins’ goals came in the 27th and 29th minutes, each set up within six yards of the net by midfielders Lamar Neagle and Andy Rose, respectively. Former Sounders forward Mike Fucito scored the lone goal for San Jose in the 86th minute.

Seattle continues to run of four games in five days at 10:30 a.m. Thursday against Vancouver.

The Sounders started several of its newcomers from a wild offseason against the Earthquakes, including goalkeeper Stefan Frei, defender Chad Marshall, midfielder Tristan Bowen and forward Kenny Cooper (full lineups below).

Frei was the only Sounder to play the whole game, as field players only played 45 minutes. He made a spectacular diving save in the 24th minute, on a flick header by Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi off a free kick.

Rookie defender Jimmy Ockford appeared to suffer a knee injury in the closing moments, after colliding with Frei, but noted on Twitter that he “got it checked and nothing’s wrong so I should be good!”

Here are the highlights:

Here is an interview with coach Sigi Schmid (another with Frei here):
