Reign FC has a week of announcements planned, and the first came late Monday night when it was confirmed the team has signed Japanese midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi on loan for the 2014 season.
Sounder at Heart noted this news had been expected (for those following closely).
Kawasumi plays for Japan’s INAC Kobe Leonessa and earned 2013 MVP honors after being the second-leading scorer in the Nadeshiko League. The 28-year-old is also a regular for Japan’s national team, which won the 2011 Women’s World Cup and finished second at the 2012 Olympics.
Here are some quotes from the news release:
“Naho is a world-class talent who will add a different dimension to our front line in the coming season. She is a proven winner in both league and international play and will bring that important mentality and experience to our club.” — Laura Harvey, general manager and head coach
“I’m very happy to be a member of Seattle Reign FC. Though it’s my first time to live and play in the US, I will adapt myself to my new life as soon as possible. I’ll try to do my best for the victory of Seattle Reign FC. You can count on my play.” — Kawasumi
