Obafemi Martins nets third goal in preseason as Sounders stay unbeaten

It’s hard to read too much into preseason, but if one thing is clear, it’s that Obafemi Martins looks ready. The DP forward scored again for Sounders FC as the team came back from an early deficit in a 1-1 tie Wednesday against the Houston Dynamo in the Carolina Challenge Cup.

Seattle is 5-0-2 in preseason, 1-0-1 in the tournament ahead of Saturday’s finale against D.C. United. Houston is 0-1-1.

The Dynamo opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Brad Davis, as the Sounders faced their first preseason deficit (believe it or not). Martins equalized in the 44th minute off a cross from Lamar Neagle, who played at forward.

Martins has a team-leading three goals in just 240 minutes, mostly against what you would deem strong squads from MLS opponents.

DeAndre Yedlin was able to go 45 minutes in his return from a sprained ankle and Leo Gonzalez put in another 45 minutes in his continued return from offseason groin surgery.

One issue left to be resolved for Seattle is at goalkeeper, though, where Stefan Frei and Marcus Hahnemann continue to split time. Frei played all 90 minutes Wednesday, but coach Sigi Schmid told reporters there is no resolution yet in the position battle.
