In a bit of a surprise move, Sounders FC has loaned forward Eriq Zavaleta to Chivas USA for the 2014 season.
Zavaleta was Seattle’s top pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. He won’t be able to play against the Sounders this season due to the rules on intraleague loans.
Here is Chivas USA coach Wilmer Cabrera in a news release: “Zavaleta is a very versatile player who knows the League, and who’s going to bring internal competition to our team. We know Eriq very well from his time with us in the U.S. U-17 Residency Program, and what he’s capable of doing not only playing as a forward but also as a center back. He is going to be a very good addition to our team.”
And here is some background on Zavaleta from the Sounders’ release:
Zavaleta, 21, made five appearances for Sounders FC in his rookie campaign in 2013. He was selected by Seattle in the first round (10th overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft on January 17. Zavaleta appeared in all 12 MLS Reserve League matches in 2013, leading Sounders FC with four goals. He was previously loaned to the San Antonio Scorpions FC of the NASL from June 10 to July 11, 2013.
Zavaleta has appeared in three games (120 minutes) for Seattle this preseason.
