Alex Caskey wasn’t at Sounders FC practice Monday, and coach Sigi Schmid hinted then that a transaction would be coming soon.
Well, it came Tuesday, as the 25-year-old midfielder has been traded to D.C. United for a third-round draft pick in 2016.
Schmid explained the move after practice: “Obviously it was very competitive with our team, and Alex has done really well for us. In the two years, he’s been an important player, and I like Alex, but the opportunity came along that there was interest from D.C.
“We were going to have to make some decisions and probably cut somebody or waive somebody, so for him it’s a good opportunity and for us it gives us an opportunity with a draft pick down the line. But Alex has done well for us. We wish him all the best.”
Here is some background on Caskey from a news release:
Caskey, 25, made 30 appearances (17 starts) over the past two seasons for Sounders FC, scoring one goal with four assists. Across all competitions, he started 29 of 42 appearances, registering three goals and seven assists in 2,469 minutes. Caskey was originally selected in the third round (47th overall) of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and was signed on March 13, 2012.
