Eddie Johnson gets paid as D.C. United makes him a designated player

Former Sounders FC forward Eddie Johnson made it no secret last year he was looking for a raise — something clearly warranted from his production, even if it wasn’t going to come in Seattle.

His reward came Thursday as D.C. United announced it has made Johnson a designated player. SI.com is reporting it as a two-year deal with an average salary of $600,000.

Here were some quotes from the news release:

“Eddie is an elite striker who is in the prime of his career, and we are thrilled that he has made a commitment to D.C. United. We look forward to Eddie’s contributions on and off the field.” — Dave Kasper, general manager

“I want to thank D.C. United for showing faith in me. I’m extremely proud to wear the Black-and-Red, and I am excited to get the season started with my new teammates.” — Johnson
