Most soccer fans have heard the saying: 2-0 is the most dangerous lead.
Obviously the concept isn’t to be taken too literally, but the idea is the advantage is can seem deceptively dominant as the trailing team can score the next goal, gather momentum and take control of the game.
Whatever the interpretation, it certainly isn’t the case against Sounders FC.
After Saturday’s home loss to Toronto FC, Seattle fell to 0-21 in MLS regular-season games once trailing 2-0. The record drops to 0-26 when you include MLS playoff games and 0-29 when factoring in all competitions (just CONCACAF Champions League, really, since the team has never gone down multiple goals in the U.S. Open Cup).
Now this isn’t to say that coming back to win a game after trailing 2-0 is easy. It has only happened 11 times in MLS regular-season games since the Sounders joined the league (58 times in MLS history).
Still, having never managed at least a tie, including in eight such games at home, is interesting.
Here is a quick breakdown:
HOME — 0-6 in MLS regular season, 0-7 including playoffs, 0-8 all competitions
AWAY — 0-15 in MLS regular season, 0-19 including playoffs, 0-12 all competitions
