MLSsoccer.com has video (courtesy of U.S. Soccer) of Jurgen Klinsmann addressing the physical treatment of Sounders FC’s Clint Dempsey, particularly this last weekend against Toronto FC.
Dempsey, as noted in this article, has been fouled 3.6 times per 90 minutes since his August return to the league, most in MLS. The six fouls suffered against Toronto were his most in a Sounders uniform.
Posted below is the video of Klinsmann, and here is a transcription:
“Obviously we are a little bit worried about Clint Dempsey getting fouled I don’t how many times in this game against Toronto, because your key players, in a certain way, you want them to be a little bit protected — protected in a way that people can’t overdo it.
“This was one of the main issues already when he came back into MLS last fall. They really kind of banged him in every game. I mean fouled over the edge. I hope that MLS is having an eye on that.
“I understand every opponent that faces Clint Dempsey says, ‘How do we want to shut him down?’ You have to be on your toes and you have to be very physical, but all within the rules.
“What I saw there on the weekend, there were certain things not within the rules any more. So I hope our players will certainly get a little bit of protection because they need to be healthy going into this World Cup.”
