It’s official: Clint Dempsey suspended two games, fined for low blow on Mark Bloom

Sounders FC’s Clint Dempsey has been suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for a low blow to Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom in last week’s 2-1 home loss.

Here is video of the incident.

An official announcement came Friday following an appeal by the MLS Players Union, which was denied. The news was first reported earlier this week by The Toronto Sun. No other players from the game were punished.

Dempsey won’t be available Saturday against Montreal or March 29 against Columbus. He will be eligible again for an April 5 road game at Portland.

Under new league rules, if the Disciplinary Committee unanimously determines “violent conduct” (as in Dempsey’s case) it’s an automatic two-game suspension.

Here is what Dempsey said about the play after the game: “To be honest with you. I felt a hand on my back. I tried to hit it away and thought I was hitting his hand away. I understand that maybe I did catch him a little bit. I apologized to him about that, but for me, all I was trying to do was smack his hand from touching my back.”
