Update: Brad Evans (calf) ruled out of USMNT game against Mexico

UPDATE: The news we suspected Saturday night has become official. Evans will not travel to Arizona for the USA-Mexico friendly. He has been replaced on the roster by Real Salt Lake’s Tony Beltran.

Sounders FC’s Brad Evans was unable to play his second-straight game due to a calf strain suffered in a Week 2 loss to Toronto FC.

You might remember, though, that the Seattle captain has been called up by the U.S. national team for Wednesday’s friendly against Mexico in Phoenix (Evans’ hometown). I asked coach Sigi Schmid about the midfielder’s status after Saturday’s game.

“Brad wasn’t ready to play tonight,” Schmid said. “His calf is still bothering him at this point. … It’s a situation where I don’t think he’s going to be ready to play on Wednesday, but he’s part of that group. It might be a decision where (USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann) wants to bring him in to be with the group, and we don’t have a problem with that.”

Seems unlikely to me, though, that Evans would travel if not healthy enough to play and perhaps risk being back in time for an April 5 road game at Portland.
