Schmid offers his side to story after cameras catch animated chat with Chad Marshall

Something that eventually caught my attention after Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Columbus was a moment captured by cameras immediately after the whistle.

As seen in this video, Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid looks to have an animated chat with defender Chad Marshall during the postgame handshakes. Many, as you can see from the comments on the video, assumed Schmid was upset with Marshall, perhaps for congratulating his ex-teammates.

The video was even posted in a story on MLSsoccer.com, the league website, after the game (since taken down).

I asked Schmid to explain his side of the story after Tuesday’s practice, particularly that it seemed like people were making quick assumptions:

“Exactly,” he said. “It’s like somebody sees somebody walking down the street, and they’ve got flaming red hair and maybe have piercings all over their body, and tattoos, and so they assume that maybe this person is not necessarily a good person or something. So for me, my situation at the end of the game was I wanted to ask Chad a question because I knew he was close to the action. I was asking him about the referee and whether the referee talked to them at the end of the game. That was my question to him.

“I know at the point I was amped up because I was a little upset with the refereeing, and I know when I get amped up my arms start flailing, so people then take an assumption. But you shouldn’t “assume”, because it makes an “ass” out of “u” and “me”, and I think there were a lot of people who assumed things on that.”

For some, it might be an easy excuse since the microphones didn’t capture the audio, but Crew forward Justin Meram, who was nearby, had been asked about the incident, too.

Here is a snippet from The Columbus Dispatch:

According to Meram, who was right there, Schmid was upset about the final play and not the fact that Marshall was talking with his ex-teammates.

“Sigi was just more asking about the play and what happened, to be honest,” Meram said. “That’s what I overheard. Chad was exceptional tonight for them.”
