Only four teams in MLS play the majority of their home games on artificial turf, so the thought of having until week until Week 6 to play on grass seems a bit crazy.
That is what the Sounders face after hosting three of their first five games on the turf at CenturyLink Field, plus road games on turf in Week 3 at Montreal (Olympic Stadium) and Saturday at Portland (Providence Park).
Speaking of the Timbers turf, there was an interesting story in The Oregonian a couple weeks ago on the FieldTurf failing after just three seasons — not the eight that had been planned.
The team was able to work out a deal with the city, though, to cover costs of having the replace the turf perhaps every two years. There are also some details in the story that give some idea of how expensive the process can be.
