Sounders FC vs. Portland pregame

PORTLAND—Welcome to the Rose City, where it’s cold, gray and wet — as I mentioned on Twitter — perfect conditions for the 85th soccer meeting between Seattle and Portland (a series that Seattle leads 42-31-11 dating to 1975 in the old North American Soccer League).

The Sounders have lost three straight in the series and are 0-3-1 in their last four trips down south.

Portland, though, has had its struggles so far this season at 0-2-2, the worst start in franchise history.

Not a lot of personnel questions in this one for Sounders. We’ll see if Clint Dempsey is able to start after playing 90 minutes Wednesday against Mexico. Brad Evans isn’t expected to be available, and Andy Rose and Osvaldo Alonso were somewhat limited this week (though coach Sigi Schmid said Alonso should be fine).

I’ll post lineups here when they become available.

Sounders FC lineup: GK Stefan Frei, D DeAndre Yedlin, D Chad Marshall, D Jalil Anibaba, D Leo Gonzalez, M Michael Azira, M Osvaldo Alonso, M Gonzalo Pineda, F Clint Dempsey, F Obafemi Martins, F Kenny Cooper

Sounders FC bench: GK Marcus Hahnemann, D Zach Scott, D Dylan Remick, M Marco Pappa, M Lamar Neagle, F Kevin Parsemain, F Chad Barrett

Portland lineup: GK Andrew Weber, D Alvas Powell, D Pa Modou Kah, D Norberto Paparatto, D Michael Harrington, M Will Johnson, M Diego Valeri, M Diego Chara, M Kalif Alhassan, M Darlington Nagbe, F Maximiliano Urruti

Portland bench: GK Jake Gleeson, D Futty Danso, D Jack Jewsbury, M Steve Zakuani, M Ben Zemanski, F Gaston Fernández, F Frederic Piquionne

Notes: Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin start after playing against Mexico on Wednesday. Leo Gonzalez makes his first start of the season. Jalil Anibaba makes his first start as a Sounder. Kevin Parsemain makes his first appearance on the bench. Brad Evans (calf) and Andy Rose (hamstring) are not available. Sounders sticking with a 4-3-3. Lamar Neagle dropped to the bench. For Portland, ex-Sounder Andrew Weber is in the starting lineup, as is Darlington Nagbe, who was listed as questionable. Ex-Sounder Steve Zakuani is on the bench. Kenny Cooper and Andrew Weber are the first two players to have participated on either side of this MLS rivalry.
