Week 5 in MLS: Power rankings and other thoughts from Alan Hinton

In a weekly feature that we’ll continue throughout the season, local legend Alan Hinton, who coached the old NASL Sounders and did broadcast work recently for the MLS team, has offered to provide his thoughts on the action leaguewide.

Here was Hinton’s Week 4 post. Posted below is his latest offering, including power rankings:

*     *     *

FC Dallas deserves to be the clear No. 1: 13 goals scored and six against is very impressive. Coach Oscar Pareja has his team organized and they have started the season well. Most scouts have told me midfielder Mauro Diaz is a top player for Dallas, and he has two goals and three assists.

It will be a huge test between two teams that each scored four goals in their previous game when Seattle plays in Dallas this Saturday. The temperature in Dallas will be in low 70s rather than 100 degrees later in summer. That should help Seattle.

Congratulations are in order to both coaches and players of Portland and the Sounders for their attacking, entertaining and “go for goal” tactics that made the 4-4 draw such a memorable game. It could have been 8-8. Neither team won, but the game won — and so did MLS. The rivalry between the Timbers and Sounders continues to get stronger.

Portland should get their first win of the season at home vs. Chivas USA on Saturday. Chivas, I feel, will struggle from here.

Good news: Showing the popularity of MLS and soccer in North America, teams in Orlando, New York City, Miami and now Atlanta will join the league in the next couple of years. Maybe a team or two could also move to bigger markets and — bingo — we have an even bigger, thriving MLS.

I did suggest before the season that Clint Dempsey had the quality needed to score between 10 and 15 goals for the Sounders this season. On the evidence of last Saturday’s three-goal performance in Portland, I might increase my forecast.

Alan Hinton’s MLS power rankings

1. FC Dallas
2. Toronto FC
