Week 6 in MLS: Power rankings and other thoughts from Alan Hinton

In a weekly feature that we’ll continue throughout the season, local legend Alan Hinton, who coached the old NASL Sounders and did broadcast work recently for the MLS team, has offered to provide his thoughts on the action leaguewide.

Here was Hinton’s Week 5 post. Posted below is his latest offering, including power rankings:

Sounders get another terrific comeback win at a tough Dallas with Clint Dempsey, who is as hot as a pistol, scoring two following his hat trick at Portland. He has now six goals for this young Sounders season. Dempsey and Obafemi Martins seem to be developing a dynamic relationship which could be exciting.

Goalkeeper Stefan Frei recovered from an early unfortunate error in Dallas by making two world-class saves late to preserve the win. Frei showed a lot of character along with a good team effort.

Last season coach Sigi Schmid was forced to make many changes because of many injuries. Hopefully this season he will make fewer team changes with the difficult choice of which good players do not start, and that’s a winning formula.

Chivas in L.A. on Saturday should not be overlooked. Three points at Chivas, then three straight home games could put the Sounders looking for the top spot in the West.
