Obafemi Martins: ‘The goals will come because I think I’m working hard.’

Sounders FC’s Obafemi Martins has just one goal this season, which might seem disappointing from the outside if you’re not paying close enough attention. He also has an MLS-leading four assists, of course, and has proven consistently dangerous in the early.

Coach Sigi Schmid and teammate Clint Dempsey have been among those to praise the early work of Martins, who doesn’t seem too affected by his lack of goals.

“I don’t feel pressure,” Martins said. “I just want to play to enjoy it, try to help my teammates. The important thing is trying to score goals and trying to win games, as well, and that’s what I’m doing right now to help the team. The goals will come because I think I’m working hard. I’m not going to stop until I get my goals, but the important thing is that we’re doing well. We just need to win games.”

Martins noted that selfishness (e.g. pressing to get goals for himself) doesn’t help the team and he is still confident he’ll have a good season.

Here is video of the Martins interview this week, where he talks more about his partnership with Dempsey, playing against Mauro Rosales and how the team has become a “family” in the locker room:
