Sounders fouled team-record 26 times by Chivas USA (game notes)

Coming into the 2014 season, the Sounders had never been fouled more than 22 times in a game. Following Saturday’s 2-1 road comeback against Chivas USA, Seattle has reached that threshold three times — and the 26 fouls suffered at the StubHub Center were a new record.

Here is a look at the fouls suffered by game:

Week 1 vs. Sporting Kansas City: 25
Week 2 vs. Toronto FC: 25
Week 3 at Montreal: 11
Week 4 vs. Columbus Crew: 17
Week 5 at Portland: 21
Week 6 at FC Dallas: 19
Week7 at Chivas USA 26

The Sounders are on pace to be fouled just about 700 times, an amazing number considering the team record is 438 (set in 2012) and the most by a team last year was 480 (Dallas, Montreal).

Obafemi Martins was a popular target Saturday, being fouled seven times, which ties a Sounders record (set Week 1 by Osvaldo Alonso) and was much as Chivas USA’s whole team. He came into the game having been fouled eight times all season.

This issue will be covered more in my day-after story for Monday’s paper.
