Week 7 in MLS: Power rankings and other thoughts from Alan Hinton

In a weekly feature that we’ll continue throughout the season, local legend Alan Hinton, who coached the old NASL Sounders and did broadcast work recently for the MLS team, has offered to provide his thoughts on the action leaguewide.

Here was Hinton’s Week 6 post. Posted below is his latest offering, including power rankings:

The Sounders have earned the No. 1 spot in my MLS rankings because of the outstanding three road performances — two wins, one tie, scoring nine goals.

Seattle’s fitness level is very high with a good attitude and confidence is good as the team looks forward to a three-game home stand. Two or three wins  could put the Sounders on top or near the top of MLS and the Western Conference.

It will be important for Sounders to concentrate in the Colorado game this Saturday. The penalty kick awarded to Chivas last week was a bad call — Osvaldo Alonso played the ball, so no foul — but there was a delightful game-winning goal by Obafemi Martins and lovely assist from Clint Dempsey.

It’s a huge surprise that Portland is still winless after first seven games this young MLS season.

Alan Hinton’s MLS power rankings

1. Sounders FC
2. Real Salt Lake
3. FC Dallas
4. Sporting Kansas City
5. Colorado Rapids
