Week 8 in MLS: Power rankings and other thoughts from Alan Hinton

In a weekly feature that we’ll continue throughout the season, local legend Alan Hinton, who coached the old NASL Sounders and did broadcast work recently for the MLS team, has offered to provide his thoughts on the action leaguewide.

Here was Hinton’s Week 7 post. Posted below is his latest offering, including power rankings:

*     *     *

I predicted the Sounders as No. 1 last week before three-straight home games. Win the next home games vs. Philadelphia and Dallas and we could be in a serious run of top form.

Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins are lighting up CenturyLink Field with eight goals and three assists for Clint (in six games) and three goals and four assists for Obafemi. The Sounders have scored 18 goals in eight games and could surpass its highest number in a season, which was 56 in 2011.

Sitting amongst the Emerald City Supporters must have been paradise with the Sounders surging on Colorado’s goal left, right and center, scoring three in the second half and creating many opportunities. Extremely entertaining, quality soccer.

The Sounders’ second-half performance, for me, was the best half so far in the Sounders’ sixth season in MLS. Philadelphia looks very beatable on Saturday at CenturyLink, and then Dallas on Wednesday, May 7, could be two more victories.

It is a major surprise to us all that Portland, who won the West in 2013, is at the bottom and Sounders are top at this point. The Timbers have still not won in eight games, but I expect them to come on strong soon. They have too much talent to be at the bottom. Sounders at 16 points and Portland at five points  — that’s a shocker.

Alan Hinton’s MLS power rankings
