The streak is over.
Sounders FC’s Clint Dempsey had gone seven straight regular-season games with either a goal or assist dating to last year, a span that saw the star forward collect nine goals and three assists overall.
His six straight games this season factoring into a goal were third most in franchise history.
It was an epic run that erased a lot of doubts and has the U.S. national team captain in prime form heading to the World Cup. Sure, he hasn’t factored into Seattle’s last three goals, but even coach Sigi Schmid admitted he was glad to see the team wasn’t entirely reliant on its superstar.
Dempsey, of course, still leads the league with eight goals and has three multigoal performances in his last five games. He has played a crucial role in 13 of the last 17 Seattle goals when he’s been on the field.
“He is still a huge part of our game,” Schmid said of Dempsey. “Sometimes people get all hung up on goals and assists and that’s the key whether or not he has a good game or not. … Clint is certainly very involved in our offensive attacks. Even if there are no goals and assists, he is still playing a very important role on our team.”
