Reign FC’s Sydney Leroux scored a 78th-minute equalizer Thursday as the U.S. women’s national team salvaged a 1-1 tie with Canada, an exhibition played in Winnipeg.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 35th minute when 18-year-old defender Kadeisha Buchanan headed in a corner kick from Diana Matheson. The U.S. responded when Leroux got on the end of a long cross into the penalty box and fired home a one-time right-footed shot from about nine yards.
Leroux, the reigning NWSL Player of the Week for her winner Saturday in Washington, has six goals in 2014 to lead the USWNT, and her 30 international goals overall are tied for 16th in federation history. The forward, who played for Canadian youth national teams, has scored in three straight against her home country.
Club teammate Hope Solo played a full game in goal, making two saves.
The U.S. is unbeaten in 30 games against Canada (25-0-5) and held a 14-4 shot advantage.
