Week 10 in MLS: Power rankings and other thoughts from Alan Hinton

In a weekly feature that we’ll continue throughout the year, local legend Alan Hinton, who coached the old NASL Sounders and did broadcast work for many season for the MLS team, has offered to provide his thoughts on the action leaguewide.

Here was Hinton’s Week 9 post. Posted below is his latest offering, including power rankings:

*     *     *

I just had to take Sounders from the No. 1 spot after three weeks, and here’s why: the bad defeat in New England and three top starters will be missing versus San Jose on Saturday while they are at World Cup training camp.

It’s an opportunity for bench players to stake a claim to a starting position. Last week’s 5-0 strange hammering came in spite of the Sounders’ fast first 10 minutes, when they outplayed New England with Obafemi Martins missing an open header very early. Everything New England hit at goal seemed to be a goal. The Sounders have to move on as seven wins from 11 games is still an excellent start to the 2014 MLS season.

Real Salt Lake deserves to be No. 1. They are unbeaten, scoring lots of goals and conceding very few — a recipe for success. New coach Jeff Cassar is doing well.

I have moved Vancouver up to No. 3 and I commend new coach Carl Robinson for taking a strong hold on the Whitecaps and making them his team. He’s not afraid to make changes. A huge game will be May 24: Whitecaps vs. Sounders.

Portland is struggling. Last week versus L.A., the Timbers went 1-0 down in 90th minute and tied it 1-1 in the 95th minute. Portland is struggling to find last season’s rhythm.

What a shame that former Sounder Eddie Johnson has been cut from U.S. World Cup team. He did so much, scoring vital goals in World Cup qualifying games.
