U.S. men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named his final roster of 23 for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Sounders FC’s Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin were included in the roster. Seattle’s Brad Evans was one of the final cuts.
Another stunning omission was Los Angeles Galaxy star Landon Donovan, perhaps the best American soccer player of all-time. The other cuts were Terrence Boyd, Joe Corona, Maurice Edu, Clarence Goodson and Michael Parkhurst.
The final cuts will be returning to their club teams but remain on the USMNT standby list in case of injury.
“It’s an exciting moment when you have narrowed the roster down as a coaching staff, and these 23 players that you’ve chosen can focus now purely on Brazil,” Klinsmann said in a news release.
“We can go into more specific things about technical approaches, and about the opponents. For the players, it’s very important to know that they are now part of it and they can relax and know they are on the list going to Brazil and taking it from there. After almost 10 days of work right now, we thought the point has come to make the decision.”
More to come.
