A look back at the controversial play from the Sounders-Whitecaps game

The latest episode of MLSsoccer.com’s Instant Replay is out, a feature that hasn’t featured the Sounders the past couple weeks. There were plenty of controversial plays to examine from Saturday’s meeting with the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place, though, and host Simon Borg starts at the 5:16 mark in the video below.

The biggest call, of course, was referee Ismail Elfath awarding a penalty kick to the Seattle in the 81st minute, when Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit had his hands on Cam Weaver‘s shoulders while challenging for a header.

I felt the call was soft, even having seen this picture.

Here was coach Sigi Schmid‘s take on it Tuesday: “It’s tough to jump when a defender has his hands on your shoulders.”

There were a few other plays noted in the video, like Erik Hurtado coming in studs up on Leo Gonzalez and then Osvaldo Alonso‘s tackle on Pedro Morales on the box.

Anything stand out to you in the PK call or any others?
