Sounders, Whitecaps warned by MLS for mass confrontation; Chad Barrett fined

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced Thursday that Sounders FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps violated league rules regarding mass confrontation during the second half of Saturday’s game.

The play in question came when Vancouver coach Carl Robinson and Seattle midfielder Gonzalo Pineda had a dispute over a throw-in. You can watch the video here.

Since this is the first instance of mass confrontation for both teams, they were issued a warning.

“I have my own feelings on that,” coach Sigi Schmid told reporters after practice. “It’s certainly something we want to avoid, but the way that it’s structured… as a coach, you can talk to your team about it. I’m on the sideline and I’m shouting at my team to get away, but they don’t hear you. I guess we’re at fault as coaches because they went in there.

“It’s tough to figure sometimes because there’s really very little you can do. If I run out on the field to keep them away, then I get a bigger fine, so I’m restricted to my little area — I’d get fined anyway. … Our team, I don’t think we gathered around the referee. I think it was more protection of each other. It’s just something that we want to avoid as much as possible.”

In addition, Seattle’s Chad Barrett (contact to the head of an opponent) and Vancouver’s Pedro Morales (escalating the incident) were fined an undisclosed amount.

Barrett posted his reaction on Twitter:
