Week 12 in MLS: Power rankings and other thoughts from Alan Hinton

In a weekly feature that we’ll continue throughout the year, local legend Alan Hinton, who coached the old NASL Sounders and did broadcast work for many season for the MLS team, has offered to provide his thoughts on the action leaguewide.

Here was Hinton’s Week 11 post. Posted below is his latest offering, including power rankings:

*     *     *

Superb, entertaining game — Seattle 2, Vancouver 2, — as the rivalry gets better. The Whitecaps had a strong opening 10 minutes with a powerful midfield and offense.

The Sounders never quit and, in the end, could have won when Obafemi Martins hit the post. Vancouver could have won late, but two Stefan Frei saves earned the valuable point.

Portland, as expected, is finally moving up the table in the West. New England is the winner of five straight, scoring many goals, and deserves to keep the No. 1 spot.

A strong rumor in UK is that new next season MLS expansion team New York City are hot on the trail of Spanish star David Villa. That would be another signal for an improving MLS.

Seattle vs. RSL on Saturday is a big game.

1. New England
