Most attention these days is on the U.S. men’s national team amid this exciting World Cup, but the women’s national team sneaked in a friendly Saturday against France, notching a 1-0 win behind a goal from Sydney Leroux and a shutout from Hope Solo — two Reign FC stars.
Leroux scored the winner in the 21st minute, her team-leading seventh goal of the year, in front of 9,799 fans at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The forward’s 31 goals rank 16th in USWNT history.
Solo earned her 71st career shutout, which ties the federation record set by Briana Scurry. Solo, a Richland native and University of Washington product, needed 152 games to reach the milestone, starting in 2000. Scurry took 173 games from 1994 to 2008.
The game was delayed about 30 minutes due to lightning in the area. The two teams meet again Thursday in East Hartford, Conn.
