Matt Pentz’ MLS power rankings, 8/20

Real Salt Lake is rising and the L.A. Galaxy tumbling in this week’s league power rankings.

Last week’s ranking in parentheses

1. Seattle Sounders (1)
Still topping table in points per game, but that gap is closing as quickly as the others did.
2. Sporting Kansas City (2)
4-1 victory over third-place Toronto shows just how in control of the Eastern Conference SKC is.
3. Real Salt Lake (4)
The more Kyle Beckerman adjusts back into the team from the World Cup, the stronger RSL becomes.
4. F.C. Dallas (5)
Fabian Castillo is as dangerous as any attacker in the league when he’s in this kind of form.
5. L.A. Galaxy (2)
Games in hand don’t mean very much when they turn into three-goal defeats.
6. D.C. United (6)
Another week, another victory for a DCU team that looks to have some staying power.
7. Vancouver Whitecaps (7)
In a race as tight as the Western Conference this is no place to be dropping points against Chivas.
8. Toronto F.C. (8)
Nothing cools off a hot streak like a resounding road defeat to a fellow contender.
9. Portland Timbers (10)
Will it be too little, too late for the Timbers? Sunday’s rivalry match will help provide the answer.
10. New York Red Bulls (9)
NYRB better have enjoyed that week off with a busy run of games coming up.
11. Columbus Crew (14)
Looked like world beaters against the Galaxy, but consistency remains an open question.
12. Colorado Rapids (11)
Four straight losses and now Colorado’s captain Drew Moor has been lost for the season with a knee injury.
13. Philadelphia Union (12)
Instead of knocking Houston out for good, Philly may have just let it back in the playoff hunt.
14. San Jose Earthquakes (13)
See the Galaxy section: the ‘Quakes boast games in hand but are unlikely to take advantage.
15. Houston Dynamo (16)
Recent surge is a start, but postseason slots still a long way off.
16. New England Revolution (15)
The Charlie Davies comeback tour is keeping New England in the mix.
17. Chicago Fire (17)
Now it doesn’t even have the U.S. Open Cup to distract from a disappointing run.
18. Chivas USA (18)
Keeping other teams’ playoff hopes alive since May. New England is up next.
19. Montreal Impact (19)
Montreal’s 1-0 victory over Chicago broke a six-match losing streak.
