The Sounders will be without midfielder Marco Pappa “for at least the next two weekends” while he goes on international duty with Guatemala, Seattle coach Sigi Schmid confirmed after his team’s 1-0 victory over Colorado on Saturday.
Guatemala is in Group B of the seven-nation Copa Centroamericana with Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, and the top four finishers at the event qualify automatically for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The tournament begins Sept. 3 and concludes with the final on the 13th.
“Of course, it’s always an honor to go to the national team when they think about me,” Pappa said. “You know how important it is to go represent your country no matter what. Like I said, I go with all my positives and hope we can do good with the national team.
“I will also always be thinking about this team (Seattle) and hope they’re doing good.”
Pappa will likely miss Seattle match at Chivas USA on Sept. 3 and at home to Real Salt Lake on Sept. 12 before returning for the Open Cup final Sept. 16 in Philadelphia.
