Matt Pentz’s MLS power rankings, 9/10

Rankings mostly held steady this week, as the contenders solidified their status.

Last week’s ranking in parentheses

1. Seattle Sounders (1)
Big week ahead for the league leaders: A visit from fellow contender RSL on Friday, followed by the U.S. Open Cup final in Philadelphia next Tuesday.
2. L.A. Galaxy (2)
The flood of Galaxy goals continued last Friday against Colorado, as the hosts netted six against the free-falling Rapids.
3. D.C. United (3)
A scoreless draw in Vancouver isn’t a dream result, but with the rest of the Eastern Conference crumbling around DCU, it’ll do for now.
4. Real Salt Lake (4)
Friday’s match might be a must-win for RSL’s Supporter’s Shield hopes. The team is a playoff lock regardless.
5. F.C. Dallas (5)
A hard-fought loss at Rio Tinto is nothing to be ashamed of. This group could make some serious playoff noise given the right matchup.
6. Sporting Kansas City (6)
Say thanks to the relative weakness of the rest of the East, Sporting. It’s the only thing keeping you propped up after four straight league losses.
7. New England Revolution (9)
Four straight victories have lifted the rejuvenated Revs into third place in the East, and given K.C.’s form, they might not stop there.
8. Vancouver Whitecaps (8)
The draw with red-hot DCU looked even better after fellow fifth-spot contender Portland dropped a pair of points at home against San Jose.
9. Portland Timbers (7)
If Liam Ridgewell was supposed to a cure-all for the leaky Portland defense, surrendering three goals to the ‘Quakes was a reality check.
10. Philadelphia Union (13)
For a while, the Cup final looked to be the consolation prize of an underwhelming campaign. Instead, Philly is shaping up to be a playoff dark horse.
11. Columbus Crew (10)
Multi-goal wins are practically a given against Chivas USA these days, but it was a welcome boost after Columbus’ inexplicable Montreal stumble.
12. New York Red Bulls (12)
Massive week for NYRB: versus D.C. on Wednesday, at Philly on Saturday. A visit from the Sounders awaits next weekend.
13. San Jose Earthquakes (14)
Eight points out of the playoff spots with two games in hand … do you really want to completely write off these perennial spoilers?
14. Toronto F.C. (11)
I know collapses are currently in vogue in the East, but the speed of Toronto’s tumble has still been something to behold.
15. Houston Dynamo (17)
Speaking of lurking on the edges of the postseason picture, the Dynamo are a hot streak away from being in the thick of it.
16. Colorado Rapids (15)
Five straight losses, the latest by six goals. The offseason cannot come fast enough in Denver.
17. Chicago Fire (16)
Chicago’s home match against Toronto on Saturday gets my full backing as the saddest matchup of the week.
18. Montreal Impact (18)
Don’t expect L.A.’s goal barrage to stop any time soon, not with a trip to Montreal on the docket for Wednesday.
19. Chivas USA (19)
If there’s one thing the Goats excel at, it’s providing a jolt to a struggling opponent. Say thanks again, Sporting.
