Notes from the practice field: Pappa lights up Copa

With two more tallies in Guatemala’s group stage finale against Honduras, Sounders midfielder Marco Pappa is now the leading scorer at the 2014 Copa Centroamericana with four goals.

The 2-0 victory lifted the Guatemalans into the final on Saturday afternoon against Costa Rica. Both nations have already qualified for next summer’s Gold Cup, and the winner will earn a berth in the 2016 Copa America Centenario — the joint North and South American championship set to be hosted in the United States.

“Marco has really played a real dominant role for them in this tournament so far,” Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said.

– Roster freeze approaches

All MLS rosters freeze on Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. PST, but don’t rule out the Sounders making a move before the deadline hits.

“We’ve got some things going,” Sporting Director Chris Henderson said after training at Starfire Sports Complex on Thursday.

Added Schmid: “We’re not ruling anything out.”

– German goalkeeper trains with Sounders

German goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, who most recently played at Schalke, was in training with the Sounders for the past few days, though with three ‘keepers already on the roster, Schmid said it wasn’t with an eye for a potential signing.

“He wanted an opportunity to see what soccer was like in the states,” said Schmid, who has known Hildebrand since the 1999 youth World Cup. “Why don’t you come on over? You’ll see what a club is like in the U.S. and what Seattle’s like. Also, with the rest of MLS: The training, the atmosphere, the professionalism.”
