Monday morning MLS roundup: Timbers continue push for 5th

Don’t sleep on the possibility of a Cascadia rematch of last year’s Sounders-Timbers playoff series: Portland, which has struggled with inconsistent form all season long, is now in the driver’s seat for the fifth and final spot in the West after a 3-0 victory over Vancouver on Saturday.

The result leaves the Timbers two-points clear of the Whitecaps in fifth place — and clinched the head-to-head tiebreaker — and eight points clear of seventh-place Colorado.

If the season ended today, that would mean a one-match playoff at Dallas for the right to play Seattle in the Western Conference semifinals.

– The L.A. Galaxy pulled even with Seattle at the top of both the Western Conference and Supporter’s Shield standings courtesy of its 2-1 win against Dallas on Saturday, though the Sounders do still have a match in hand.

The Galaxy fought out of a one-goal second-half hole, with Alan Gordon completing the comeback with an 83rd-minute header.

– Speaking of the Supporter’s Shield, D.C. United ensured that Seattle’s 4-1 loss in New York on Saturday night wasn’t too costly, leaving two points on the table in Chicago after scoring three unanswered goals to climb a two-goal deficit only to surrender a late equalizer.

– The Eastern Conference playoff hunt got even more crowded, as weekend results leaving just five points between New England in third and Toronto in seventh. New York, meanwhile, solidified its grip on fourth and Columbus and Philadelphia continue to look like teams that could give contenders fits — as long as they get in.

San Jose seemingly bowed out of the Western Conference playoff race for good with a limp 2-0 defeat against Montreal, a loss that has it still three points behind Colorado — a Rapids team that was blasted 5-1 by rivals Real Salt Lake on Friday night.
