What to watch for: Sounders FC vs. FC Dallas

Seattle and Dallas, the first- and fourth-place teams in the Western Conference, meet in a potential playoff preview on Wednesday night in Frisco, Texas.

Last time out: Sounders 2, FC Dallas 1 on May 7 at CenturyLink Field — Kenny Cooper struck as the death as the Sounders won their fifth straight and downed Dallas for the second time of the young season.

Battle to watch: Fabian Castillo versus the Seattle defense

The winger is electrifying to watch when he’s on his game and deservedly picked up some MVP buzz during a red-hot August — during which he scored four goals in a three-match stretch. He’s cooled off since, hasn’t found the back of the net in his last three starts and missed both Dallas’ weekend loss to L.A. and training Monday with a nagging hamstring injury.

But Castillo can change a game in an instant, especially if play becomes stretched and he can show off his speed on the counter.

The Seattle defense, meanwhile, allowed four goals its last time out, a performance that inspired Djimi Traore to say this: “To be honest, I feel ashamed. It was an awful performance from us.”

Of what is increasingly looking like Seattle’s first-choice unit, only Chad Marshall started that game at Red Bull Arena. But even it has been leaky in recent matches, allowing two goals in each the Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake matches — and coming within the width of the left post in stoppage time of surrendering a pair in the Open Cup final, as well.

Player to watch: Dallas midfielder Andres Escobar

The Colombian on loan from Ukrainian powerhouse Dynamo Kyiv has become a regular fixture in the Dallas midfield.

The winger’s five-shot, four-chances-created, three-successful-dribbles, one-goal night against New England in late July hints at his threat, and when both he and Castillo have it going, they’re one of the most thrilling attacks in MLS.

How to watch: The match will be televised locally on JOEtv, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. PST.
