Monday afternoon MLS roundup: One to go

With 33 MLS match days down and only one to go, just a single playoff spot is still up for grabs.

The all-Cascadia race for fifth place in the Western Conference will come down to the final weekend, as both Vancouver and Portland played out scoreless draws this past weekend — though in far different circumstances.

San Jose’s final-ever match at Buck Shaw Stadium was a snoozefest, as it and the ‘Caps combined on just four shots on target. Portland, meanwhile, barraged the Real Salt Lake goal throughout the second half of their Friday-night showcase, with only a combination of Nick Rimando and voodoo keeping the Timbers out of the net.

The Whitecaps are unlikely to care about aesthetics at this point in the season, though, and the hard numbers remain in their favor: Vancouver maintained its one-point edge and hosts hapless Colorado at home to close the regular season.

Real Salt Lake coach Jeff Cassar seemed more than happy with his team’s result in Providence Park, a stance that seemed a bit odd, given his team entered the weekend just two points up on F.C. Dallas for third place. And Dallas made RSL pay a day later, grinding past Colorado 1-0, over Salt Lake and at least temporarily out of the play-in game.

RSL now needs some help to avoid playing for its life in the fourth-/fifth-place game next week.

Toronto’s 1-1 draw with Montreal merely confirmed the inevitable: Columbus would be claiming the final postseason berth in the East.

The Crew might not stop there, either. Columbus stunned New York 3-1 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday to hop into fourth place. And depending on the NYRB-Sporting Kansas City result next weekend, could climb as high as third.

There are no more spots to play for, but still plenty of jockeying for position left to do in the Eastern Conference.
