Major League Soccer’s conference championship weekend takes top billing in this Weekend Watch.
Eibar vs. Real Madrid, Spanish Primera, Saturday at 9 a.m.
I’ll stop pounding the “little Eibar taking on the Spanish giants” storyline into the ground soon, I promise. But the prospect of the defending European champions traveling to the Basque club’s 5,250-seat stadium to take on the 11th-place team in La Liga is too good to pass up.
Arsenal vs. Manchester United, English Premier League, Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Call this the stuck-in-flux derby, pitting two traditional heavyweights both pining for better times. The result could have some practical purposes, as well: The sides are could each end up straddling the Champions League line by season’s end.
New York Red Bulls vs. New England Revolution, MLS Cup playoffs, Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
What a final four the Major League Soccer bracket has served up, beginning with this first leg of this Eastern Conference final. Henry and Jones, Wright-Phillips and Nguyen – plus the adding intrigue of two teams gunning for their first-ever MLS Cup.
Inter Milan vs. AC Milan, Italian Serie A, Sunday at 11:45 a.m.
I’ve always found Serie A to be an acquired taste, with its focus on dramatics and disciplined tactics. There’s no denying the appeal of the Milan derby in front of a packed San Siro, though.
Racing Club vs. River Plate, Argentine Primera, Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Suffice it to say River has fully recovered from its shocking relegation a few years back. It faced off against traditional rival Boca Juniors in the semifinals of the Copa Sudamericana earlier in the week, playing out a scoreless draw in Leg 1. And it travels to second-place Racing on Sunday as the top team in the Torneo through 16 matches.
