Just as the holidays are nearly upon us, so Major League Soccer award season has begun: FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele has been voted the 2014 MLS rookie of the year by the league’s media, players and club management.
The 22-year-old scored seven goals and dished out three assists in 26 regular-season appearances, also scoring in Dallas’ play-in-game victory over Vancouver. Akindele outpaced Chicago’s Harry Shipp, who finished second and was followed by Steve Birnbaum of D.C. United and Chris Duvall of the New York Red Bulls.
Michael Parkhurst has won the league’s Individual Fair Play title, MLS also announced Monday, while the Philadelphia Union won the team fair play award.
Award season continues Tuesday and through Dec. 4.
