Weekend watch: Must-see matches from around the world

Slim pickings this weekend, but it ends with a bang with the Western Conference final at CenturyLink Field on Sunday evening.

Leeds United vs. Derby County, English League Championship, Saturday at 7 a.m.

Anybody who has even seen or read The Damned United – and you should really do both — will appreciate the historical implications of this one. Don Revie and Brian Clough may be long gone, but the visitors are currently tops in the division.

New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls, MLS Eastern Conference final, Saturday at 12 p.m.

The hosts carry a one-goal lead – and two vital away goals – into the decisive leg of this tie courtesy of its well-rounded performance at Red Bull Arena last Sunday. New York, though, certainly has the weaponry to make this one interesting.

Southampton vs. Manchester City, English Premier League, Sunday at 5:30 a.m.

As much as it pains me to admit it with my inexplicable Portsmouth rooting attachment, its South-Coast rival Southampton is the story of the EPL season so far, a small-market club swinging far above its weight. The visitors make for a telling contrast.

Vfl Wolfsburg vs. Borussia Monchengladbach, German Bundesliga, Sunday at 6:30 a.m.

Yeah, yeah, Bayern Munich is already running away with the German league title. Yet the race for the remaining Champions League spots is as competitive as ever. This pair occupies the final two berths at the moment, and which is the more legitimate contender could show through Sunday.

Juventus vs. Torino, Italian Serie A, Sunday at 9 a.m.

This might not be the most well known Italian inter-city rivalry, given the historical dominance of Juve. But you could do far worse with your brunch hour than spending it with Andrea Pirlo.
