Portland’s Rodney Wallace tops Seattle ‘keeper Stefan Frei in Comeback Player voting

Portland Timbers midfielder Rodney Wallace scored five goals in 17 appearances this season, his first after recovering from offseason knee surgery, and has been rewarded with the MLS Comeback Player of the Year award, the league announced Tuesday in a release.

Wallace finished less than four percentage points ahead of New England Revolution forward Charlie Davies and five more in front of Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the weighted vote.

Davies, who was once badly injured in a car crash that nearly derailed his career, has helped lead the line for the MLS-Cup-bound Revs. Frei, meanwhile, recovered from a lack of games and confidence from a few lost years in Toronto to put together a sharp postseason in goal for the Sounders.
