Weekend watch: Must-see matches from around the world

Knockout competitions galore headline this version of the Weekend Watch:

Accrington Stanley vs. Yeovil Town, English F.A. Cup, Saturday at 7 a.m.

The allure of the world’s oldest association football competition, to me at least, is fixing your wagon to a club whose name you can barely pronounce all way from modest beginnings to their inevitable, glorious one-sided rout at the hands of a traditional power. Saturday’s hosts have one of the most delightful monikers in the game, while the Glovers just spent a season swinging above their weight in the Championship before being relegated back down to League 1.

Bayern Munich vs. Bayer Leverkusen, German Bundesliga, Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Leverkusen is the last team to have won in the Allianz Arena in league play, and though that came way back in October of 2012, it has the firepower to put a scare into Bayern again this weekend.

Barcelona vs. Espanyol, Spanish Primera, Sunday at 8 a.m.

What this inner-city rivalry lacks in balance – Barca is unquestionably the dominant force – it makes up for in politics. FCB’s identity has long since become inter-twined with Catalan pride, while Espanyol has, rightly or wrongly, become known as the more “Spanish” club.

L.A. Galaxy vs. New England Revolution, MLS Cup final, Sunday at 12 p.m.

Avert your eyes, Sounders fans. Seattle was an unlucky bounce one way or the other from hosting the league title game. Instead, it’ll watch from afar while L.A. shoots for championship No. 5 and New England goes for its first.

U.A.N.L. vs. Toluca, Liga MX playoffs, Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Liga MX postseason is never lacking for entertainment – wild goal celebrations, heroes and villains being formed in an instant. Club America-Monterrey was the bigger-named matchup, but with the former in full control of that semifinal, do yourself a favor and tune into this one, instead.
