Sounders confirm Marcus Hahnemann’s retirement

Veteran goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann tipped his hand with an epic Instagram post last Wednesday and Sounders owner/general manager Adrian Hanauer seemingly confirmed it at Thursday’s season-end press conference, but the club finally made it official Monday: The veteran stopper is retiring after a 21-year professional career.

Hahnemann, 42, began his career with the A-League Sounders in 1994 out of Seattle Pacific, where he was a three-time All-American. The Seattle native then spent more than decade overseas with Fulham, Reading, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton before returning to his hometown club for his swan song.

“I’m excited for the next part of what’s to come. There’s all sorts of different opportunities ahead of me,” Hahnemann said. “The cool part is that I got to start off my career as a Sounder and I got to end it as a Sounder.

“Back then, we had four or five thousand in the stands, then for the playoffs we’d get 10,000 at Memorial Stadium. It’s incredible now to have 30,000-40,000 for every game. It’s unbelievable how it’s taken off and all of the right moves the ownership has made.”
