Orlando City selects Jalil Anibaba in MLS expansion draft, trades him to Sporting Kansas City

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid lamented last week that his teams always lost the maximum two players during expansion draft years. And while Seattle was spared that fate, its back line depth took a hit as versatile defender Jalil Anibaba was selected by Orlando City FC with its third selection on Wednesday.

Anibaba was then swiftly dealt to Sporting Kansas City to complete the teams’ deal for defender Aurelien Collin that had been announced Monday, according to the KC Star.

The Sounders protected Zach Scott in response to Anibaba’s selection and made it through the rest of the draft unscathed.

Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was taken first overall by Orlando City, while New York City FC took midfielder Ned Grabavoy from Real Salt Lake with its first pick.
