District Council approves plan for new D.C. United stadium

It’s announcement that has been years in the making, one that many times looked unlikely to ever come: D.C. United is getting its own soccer-specific stadium in the District of Columbia.

The District of Columbia Soccer Stadium Act of 2014 was approved unanimously on Wednesday for the development of a new, 20,000-25,000-seat stadium for DCU in the Buzzard Point neighborhood of Southwest Washington near Nationals Park.

The target opening date is set for 2017, and it is hoped that this will be the first of many such announcements up and down the Eastern Seaboard, from Boston to New York.

Some buzz — most of it premature — has even begun to build about a hypothetical soccer-only stadium around these parts …
