Weekend watch: Must-see matches from around the world

The Boxing Day English Premier League extravaganza was just the beginning of an Anglo-Saxon-heavy weekend of soccer.

Hibernian vs. Rangers, Scottish Championship, Saturday at 4:15 a.m.

That a Scottish second division match is getting a Weekend Watch nod before the top tier hints at the weird state of the game in that country. Scotland will be better off when both these traditional giants are back in the Premiership – as it is, they’re currently second and third in the table.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United, English Premier League, Sunday at 4 a.m.

Christian Eriksen, as is his wont, lifted Spurs to a hard-fought Boxing Day victory at Leicester City. Man United made things easier, cruising to a two-goal win over Newcastle to solidify its hold on third place.

West Ham United vs. Arsenal, English Premier League, Sunday at 7 a.m.

You’d have gotten long odds that the hosts would be the team farther up in the standings after 18 games, yet here we are. This should be a fascinating contrast in styles, too: Big Sam’s brutes against the slick passing Gunners of questionable backbone.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Brentford, English League Championship, Sunday at 7 a.m.

Wolves are ninth, four points back of the playoff places and shooting for consecutive promotions. Brentford is already in the top six and trying to reach the top flight for the first time since shortly following World War II.

Konyaspor vs Besiktas, Turkish Super Lig, Sunday at 9 a.m.

The visitors sit atop the Turkish table, level with Galatasaray on 32 points but with a game in hand. Besiktas is shooting for its first title since being implicated in the match-fixing scandal that rocked the country.
