Seattle trades up again, grabs goalkeeper Tyler Miller with 33rd pick

For a team that began the afternoon with merely a pair of second-round picks, the Sounders have certainly stayed busy at Thursday’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Philadelphia.

First, it swapped spots with Real Salt Lake to move up and take University of Washington playmaker Cristian Roldan at No. 19.

Then, in the second round, Seattle traded New England future considerations in exchange for the 33rd overall pick, with which it drafted Northwestern goalkeeper Tyler Miller.

Miller was named a second-team All-American during his senior year with the Wildcats, as NU allowed a school-record 12 goals all season long. Miller led the Big Ten in goals against average (0.56) save percentage (.853) and shutouts (nine) this season. The Woodbury, N.J., native was a first-team all-conference in both 2011 and 2012 before injury cut short a 2013 campaign where he still ranked second in the league with eight clean sheets.

Like Roldan, Miller was also a projected top 10 pick in some corners leading up to the draft.

Spurring competition behind first-choice-‘keeper Stefan Frei was one of coach Sigi Schmid’s noted offseason goals. Given that the Sounders also added former Portland goalie Troy Perkins earlier this week, consider that mission accomplished.
