Sounders draft New Mexico’s Oniel Fisher with 40th overall pick, plus other draft notables

With the 40th overall pick and its final selection of Thursday’s SuperDraft, Seattle selected Oniel Fisher out of the University of New Mexico.

Nominally listed as a midfielder, the Jamaican native has also played in defense.

Fisher, who played his first two collegiate seasons at Tyler Junior College, scored a goal against Penn State in the 2013 Sweet 16 and assisted on another against UW in the Elite 8 as the Lobos reached the Final Four in his junior season. He started 16 games as a senior and was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week in early September.

The pick drew praise from at least one national pundit:

The third and fourth rounds will take place via conference call on Jan. 20.

Here are some other draft notables from the top two rounds on Thursday:

  • With the third pick of the second round and the 24th selection overall, Portland selected Washington senior Andy Thoma. The versatile left back said earlier this week that, if he had it his way, he “would be on the same team” as the other potential Huskies draft picks. Given where Roldan ended up, suffice it to say it didn’t turn out that way.
  • Real Salt Lake used the 27th pick it got from Seattle in the Roldan trade to draft Boyd Okwuonu, a defender out of North Carolina.
