Sounders trade up to nab UW sophomore Cristian Roldan with No. 16 pick in the SuperDraft

The rumblings started during the 13th pick of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, with Vancouver on the clock and UW sophomore Cristian Roldan in a free fall. The 2012 Pac-12 freshman of the year had been a projected Top 5 pick — maybe even the top overall pick — but he was still on the board.

Garth Lagerwey, the Sounders general manager of all of a week-and-a-half, was making the rounds.

Vancouver took St. John’s defender Tim Parker, Dallas selected Otis Earle from Cal. Real Salt Lake, the club Lagerwey departed for Seattle, was on the clock.

No, he couldn’t, not with his former employees at Real Salt Lake.

Then at the podium, came the announcement: RSL had traded the 16th pick for Seattle’s 27th and other considerations. And the Sounders had used that pick to nab Roldan.

The Huskies playmaker is staying in the city he called his “second home” up at the podium after admitting he was “nervous as hell.” Roldan said he was excited to learn from current Sounders midfielders Osvaldo Alonso and Gonzalo Pineda.

“I’m excited to spend the next, however long I can be there,” Roldan said before heading over for some photo ops.

More on this to follow.
