Juventus attacker Sebastian Giovinco to join Toronto FC

Say this for Toronto FC: Its offseasons are rarely boring.

Less than a week after picking up United States national team striker Jozy Altidore and shipping off Jermain Defoe to Sunderland, TFC added another piece to its attack. Juventus’ Sebastian Giovinco has signed with Toronto on a designated player contract, the team announced Monday, and will join TFC in July on a free transfer.

Giovinco, 27, has been a Serie A standby for years. The attacking midfielder has racked up 189 career league appearances and 30 more in European competition. He’s scored 40 Serie A goals in his career, with his best single-season tally of 15 coming in 2011/12 while on loan with Parma.

Giovinco parlayed that form into a regular role with the Italian national team, picking up 21 caps since 2011 and scoring one goal while representing his country in 2012 European Championship and 2013 Confederations Cup.

He’s fallen out of favor in Turin this season, making just six league appearances all year, but still earned four national team caps in 2014.
